Showing
from the 4th of December at Leeds Design Innovation Centre, the
obsessively - minded art of Leeds newest art collective The
Hellfire Potters club.
Featuring
drawing, pottery, photography and sculpture, in styles favouring
hallucinatory detail, replication and pattern, Michael Duffey,
Andrzej Skotny, Drew Caines and Sophie Flynn, all share a common,
yet diverse obsessive trait in their approach to art.
Drew
Caines' pottery, encrusted with his hallmark miniaturised limpet-like
psychedelic turbans, features a range of imaginative
subjects exotic or otherwise, from teapots and vases encrusted
with images of the virgin Mary to tiny ceramic robots and swirling
landscape vases.
A
true outsider artist, Michael Duffey, whose drawings are entirely
fashioned with the hypnotic graphic device of black mushroom gills,
employs an organic, almost phobic line where mushrooms balloon,
mutate or insinuate themselves into unexpected forms.
Andrzej
Skotny's stylised sculptural heads and 'life circles', depicting
variations on a range of emotions/psychological states, are normally
secreted in outdoor rural settings or unexpected spaces in the
urban environment. Andy leaves his sculptures to interact with
the elements, or, in an anti-commercial gesture, to be discovered
by passers-by.
Sophie
Flynns recent drawing has featured a series of large detailed
umbrella studies. Appearing to float like satellites in the stratosphere,
these are drawn like a cartographer minutely recording the rhythms,
turns and changing light of a landscape from below.
Expect
the unexpected,
and if not,
the downright strange!
